jESC 2014: Slovenia – Ula Ložar – Nisi sam (Your light)

Hi,

jesc2014

It’s the continuation of my opinion regarding the 16 competing entries from the 16 participating countries of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014, which will be held in Marsa, Malta (officially, though, the host will be Malta as a whole. Marsa is only the location of the venue)

Only three songs left and a double post today: after Serbia, it’s Slovenia (the third and last of three debuting countries for this year’s jESC edition)‘s turn as the contemporary indie-pop ballad in slovene and english“Nisi sam (Your light)” (the slovenian title is translated as “You’re not alone”), sung by Ula Ložar gets into the limelight. Ula herself made the music together with her vocal coach Marjetka Vovk and Raay (Marjetka‘s husband. He’s no stranger to ESC fans as he composed the ESC 2014 slovenian entry (Tinkara Kovač, “Round and round”, 25th)Raay himself did help with the lyrics as well, together with Erika Mager and Lucienne Lončina (the latter co-wrote the english lyrics of the ESC 2001 slovenian entry (Nuša Derenda, “Energy”, 7th). A more extensive biography of the participant can be seen on this link: http://www.junioreurovision.tv/page/participant-profile?song=32483

Now to the opinion of the song: I would never think I’d hear a song in the indie genre on a jESC edition (at the likes of current artists such as Lana del Rey, Lorde, Birdy, etc…). But it happened with a bang: everything in it is superb – from the wonderful music concept to its lyrics of hope for a troubled person without a purpose on its own love, from its interesting display of sounds on its arrangements to Ula‘s correct of transmitting its contemporary power on her vocals… overall, a mesmerizing masterpiece (+ on the piano parts during the end of the chorus, I even get a lighter feeling of Pink Floyd‘s “The great gig in the sky”). Can’t wait to see how will she perform it live and if she’ll do it justice + I also hope this won’t be underrated, in case she does have a only due to the fact that it’s quite mature for a jESC entry

Sweden will come up very soon as the end of my jESC 2014 songs’ opinions is getting nearer. So, watch out for it…

Thank you,
