RTP – I Programa and RTP – II Programa (16/05/1977)

Hi,

time for television and for another TV schedule of both RTP 1 and RTP 2, the only portuguese channels transmitted at the time. And we’re going to a very important year in portuguese television, as we discover the schedule of Monday, 16th May 1977. A note: RTP 1 and RTP 2 were known as I (Primeiro) Programa and II (Segundo) Programa back then:

13:30: Ciclo Preparatório TV (the education segment for what is known today as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd basic education of school, before secundary education. This was the first schedule period and therefore this would end one hour before the normal TV-schedule period (on that day, the closedown of that first schedule period was at 18:05 and regular transmission would be only at 19:00. Meanwhile, we’d probally have a testcard in between)

19:00: Desenhos animados (animated series section. On that day, the focus in question was the 1975 TV version of Enid Blyton‘s children creation “Noddy”, produced by the same duo that would do some of the most unforgettable british animated series ever, such as “Danger Mouse” and “Count Duckula”: Brian Cosgrove and Mike Hall. Other show on transmission was “Gulp”, a children’s show with lots of medical tips, games and fun)

19:25: Abre-te sésamo (before we’d have our famous portuguese version from the late 80’s to the mid 90’s, we actually watched on weekly basis the original version of “Sesame Street” made in USA and at the time, it was a craze for the younger generation. Its transmission is now sadly forgotten, especially compared with the sucess that our portuguese version of the show had with the generations from the 80’s and the 90’s)

19:55: Telejornal (flash) (main news bulletin. Back then, this was divided in several editions. This was the flash of the main news bulletin that would give the first news in just 5 minutes. This would cease to exist during the 90’s)

2o:00Do arquivo e da memória (archive program. On that day, a ballet version of Euripedes‘ play “Medea” was repeated)

20:30: A visita da Cornélia (introductory program of a game show that would forever change the perception of what is a “game show” in Portugal. In a short amount of time, the show which consists in several artistic challenges with presentation done by famous actor, comedian and presenter Raul Solnado (one of the creators of the show) would start and on that day, Fialho Gouveia (famous TV and radio presenter and the other creator of the show) was in a studio to answer all the questions asked by the audience and the press concerning this future “game show”)

21:00: Telejornal (1ª edição) (main news bulletin. Back then, this was divided in several editions. This was the 1st edition of the main news bulletin)

21:35Gabriela (brazilian soap-opera produced by Rede Globo in 1975, adaptated from Jorge Amado‘s novel “Gabriela, cravo e canela”, centered in the year of 1925, when we meet Gabriela (Sônia Braga, in a leading role that made her a star), a gentle, understanding and yet naive girl that emigrates from the place she was living due to a seminal drought to work in the city of Ilhéus, right in the moment this city was getting richer by the day thanks to its market. In there, she will work as a cook on Café Vesúvio, owned by turkish born Nacib (Armando Bógus), with whom she’ll have a passionate love relationship. Other issues like politics and emancipation attempts are issued in this adaptation of the book. This was the very first brazilian soap-opera (and first soap-opera altogether) to be transmitted in Portugal and at the time, we were watching the very 1st episode. To mark this special occasion, a special show was done at the Hotel Ritz in Lisbon after the transmission of the episode with musical performances by brazilian singers Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho, Maria Creuza and an instrumental quartet, as well as an acting performance by portuguese presenter, actor and comedian Raul Solnado)

00:00Telejornal (2ª edição) (main news bulletin. Back then, this was divided in several editions. This was the late news bulletin with the resume of the news of the day and also the latest news, when needed)

00:20Fecho (it’s closedown time. A in-vision continuity person would present what’ll be the schedule for tomorrow and then would say good night to the TV-viewers + we’d hear the national hymn of Portugal: “A portuguesa”)

21:02O retrado da dama velada (original title: “Ritratto di donna velata”. Directed by Flaminio Bollini (in what would be the penulitmate directed series of his life before passing away in 1978), with music by famed composer Riz Ortolani and produced by RAI in 1975, the noir mystery mini-series put in evidence the various locations of Italy in the eyes of Luigi Certaldo (Nino Castelnuovo, famous for being (physically, since he didn’t sung at all with his own voice. Just like Catherine Deneuve and etc…) in Jacques Demy‘s 1964 groundbreaking french musical “Les parapluies de Cherbourg”) and a girl, Elisa (Daria Nicolodi, fresh from her sucess in the 1974 horror film “Profundo rosso”, directed by famed italian horror director Dario Argento), who’s supposed to be the incarnation of a veiled woman portrayed in a antique painting. From then on, several supernatural events, as also macabre deaths, mysterious apparitions coming from nowhere, amongst other situations, would happen. On that day, the 2nd episode was transmitted)

22:05: Luis Dourdill (documentary directed by José Elyseu about the portuguese painter and graphic artist, Luis Dourdillhttp://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lu%C3%ADs_Dourdil )

22:25: Telejornal (2ª edição) (main news bulletin. Back then, this was divided in several editions. This was the 2nd edition of the main news bulletin. At the time, RTP 2 (II Programa) would repeat it an hour later or so from its big sister’s channel’s counterpart)

23:00: Fecho (it’s closedown time. A in-vision continuity person would present what’ll be the schedule for tomorrow and then would say good night to the TV-viewers + we’d hear the national hymn of Portugal: “A portuguesa”)

Classic and immortal line-up for a year of big television events in Portugal: the first soap-opera ever to be seen + the preparations for a unique game show that would change the minds of people and the television critics for its inventive. Also a top-notch for a italian thriller series in a time when the genre was at its monumental peak in many countries of the world

Before ending the post, two videos: the opening of the 1975 soap-opera “Gabriela” and the second episode of “Ritratto di donna velada”:

Thank you,
