Mirela – Conocí el amor (Spanish Junior ESC NF 2004)

Hi,

We’re still a bunch of months away from jESC 2012 to be held in Amesterdam, The Netherlands. While we still await for the official list of countries and their songs, let’s go back to jESC 2004 again. But to a NF and to an entry that has become my favourite of that preselection. Talking, of course, about the first ever appearance of Mirela (that has become known to ESC fans for trying several times to go to ESC, like in 2007) and to one of the songs she sung: “Conocí el amor”

Background story of the preselection: “Eurojunior 2004”, the Spanish Junior ESC NF of 2004 was presented by Carlos Lozano (that was also a presenter of the spanish version of Operación Triunfo in its first years on TVE) and for a few weeks, we’d be introduced to the singers (in total, four solists, two duos and a trio) and to the songs (they had two songs each to sing and only one of them would go to the big final) and on 21st September 2004, we’d find out who would be Spain‘s representant for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004. María Isabel won the preselection with “Antes muerta que sencilla” and would also win the jESC 2004 later on

Eventhough I loved the winning song of the preselection, my favourite was really the song I’m going to talk about. Lyrically, the theme of the song is “love at first sight” as the girl from the song experienced the “falling in love” situation for the first time. The theme might be totally typical and unoriginal, but the lyrics are unusually poetic for a catchy song and flows quite well

Musically, it’s a retro flavoured disco (by the way, when I mean “disco”, I mean real 70’s disco sound‘s influence. Saying that for example a dance music song like “Energy” (ESC 2001) or “La la love” (ESC 2012) is a disco (influenced) song, is quite erroneous)-pop entry with both a mellow and modern touch which matches the song perfectly. In a way, the “retro feeling” touch of the song is what affects me so much (but then again, I’m normally such a sucker for songs with a “retro feeling”, no wonder why I love this so much)

Not to mention that she defended the song very well in each day of the preselection with quite a confidence. All in all, no doubts that it was the right song for her to write and sing. A pity, though, she seems to be in the gallery of wasted great singers nowadays (we also have such in Portugal, like Vanessa, Vanda Stuart, Henrique Feist, etc…): why the music record labels don’t give her a chance to get her singing carrer going in recording terms?

BONUS  The lyrics of the song:

Es poderte ver, es poderte oír
Es saber que estás
Cuando no hay nadie ya
Y siempre junto a mi

Mi primer amor
Nervios de papel
En mi diario escrito esta
Todo lo que un día te diré

Que eres mi ilusión en cada despertar
Que tu voz me hace volar

Y que, día a día, yo te quiero más
No hay palabras que inventar
En mi emoción a tanta devoción

Y conocí el amor
Por primera vez
Y sentí el calor
De un amanecer

Y tu beso tímido
Se extravió en mi corazón
Alegrándome la vida
Enseñándome a vivirla por los dos

Comote diré, com te expresaré
Que solo al mirarme
Mi alma da mil vueltas
No la detendré

Porque tú me das
Lo que yo soñé
Así creía que era amar
Es como correr hoy sobre el mar

Que eres mi ilusión en cada despertar
Que tu voz me hace volar

Y que, día a día, yo te quiero más
No hay palabras que inventar
En mi emoción a tanta devoción

Y conocí el amor
Por primera vez
Y sentí el calor
De un amanecer

Y tu beso tímido
Se extravió en mi corazón
Alegrándome la vida
Enseñándome a vivirla por los dos

(Oh oo-oh-oh)

Enseñándome a vivirla por los dos

And a further bonus – Mirela’s performance of the song in, what I recall it is (if I’m not mistaken), in the final of Eurojunior 2004:

Thank you,
