Marina and The Diamonds – Hollywood (2010)

one of the recent artists I like the most so far is Marina & The Diamonds. Of her complete name, Marina Lambrini Diamantis, she started singing in 2007 and recording in 2009. In 2010, she released her debut album “The Family Jewels” and the song she had the most sucess with was her 2nd single. The title – “Hollywood”:

According to the singer, the song is a sarcastical point of view of what’s commercial in America and the wrong values of life ponctuated in Hollywood, eventhough she likes the country and its people. The song became her first big hit, reaching the #12 spot in the British Single Charts

When I first heard it, I was instantly in love for it: from the enchanting melody from its instant chorus and from the inspirational lyrics to its meticulous videoclip that caracterizes a stereotype of the american culture (either good or bad). All connected into this meticulous indie pop song

2 years later and I’m still head over heels about it. It’s one of those songs that I can still hear on and on and on…

By the way: recently, she has released her latest album, “Electra Heart”, in a new, more electro-pop music direction and the official lead single of the album, “Primadonna”, has now become the biggest single chart of her carrer thus far

As a final treat, here’s a live performance of the song on “Later with Jools Holland” show:

  1. Weird how I only came across this blog as such a fan of Eurovision and yet you also write about one of the few current artists in the UK I really like too !

I’m not much of a fan of most current British music, but only recently discovered Marina & the Diamonds after hearing Primadonna, so listened to snippets of the new cd a lot on Amazon, which sounds really good and quite Euro/vision power pop in many places too.

Normally, I would buy really quickly, when impressed so much like this, but was only put off so far by the terrible cheap looking cover, which, ironically, is even worse on the more expensive deluxe edition. Something which also hasn’t gone unnoticed by websites such as Popjustice.

    • “Electra Heart” is a very good album (I’d say “Primadonna” and “Power & control” are the best songs of the album. “Teen idle” and “Homewrecker” are very good too), but nothing tops her debut album “The Family Jewels” 😉
